Chlorophenols High Risk

A group of chemicals historically used as preservatives and biocides in leather and textiles during storage and shipping. Includes pentachlorophenol (PCP), tetrachlorophenol, and trichlorophenol. Highly toxic and now restricted, but still found in some imported products.

Health Concerns

  • Pentachlorophenol is a probable human carcinogen
  • Can cause liver and kidney damage
  • Skin irritation and absorption
  • Neurological effects with exposure
  • Immunotoxicity
  • Dioxin contamination in some chlorophenols

Environmental Impact

  • Highly toxic to aquatic organisms
  • Persistent in environment
  • Bioaccumulates in food chain
  • Soil and groundwater contamination
  • Historical contamination at production sites

Regulatory Status

PCP banned in EU and US. AFIRM RSL restricts chlorophenols to 0.5-1 ppm depending on type. Still found in products from some regions.

What to Avoid

Imported goods with strong chemical/preservative smell. Products stored for long shipping times. Unbranded imported leather goods.

Safer Alternatives

Products from supply chains with chemical testing, domestically produced goods, certified organic textiles, brands with RSL compliance programs
