Dimethylformamide (DMF) High Risk

A solvent used in the production of synthetic leather (polyurethane/PU leather), coated fabrics, and some textile processing. DMF residues can remain in finished products and be released through skin contact or inhalation.

Health Concerns

  • Reproductive toxin - can harm unborn children
  • Liver damage with chronic exposure
  • Skin irritation and absorption through skin
  • Respiratory irritation when inhaled
  • Classified as toxic for reproduction (EU Category 1B)
  • Workers in synthetic leather production at highest risk

Environmental Impact

  • Volatile organic compound contributing to air pollution
  • Can contaminate water near production facilities
  • Slow to biodegrade in some conditions

Regulatory Status

AFIRM RSL restricts DMF to 75 ppm. EU REACH authorizes use but with controls. Some brands have stricter limits.

What to Avoid

New synthetic leather goods with strong chemical smell. Unbranded faux leather products. PU-coated items without quality certifications.

Safer Alternatives

Genuine leather from certified tanneries, plant-based leather alternatives (apple, pineapple, mushroom), water-based PU coatings, canvas or natural fabrics
