Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEs) High Risk

A class of surfactants widely used in textile manufacturing for washing, dyeing, and finishing fabrics. NPEs break down into nonylphenol, a persistent endocrine disruptor. Residues remain in clothing and are released during consumer washing.

Health Concerns

  • Break down to nonylphenol - a potent endocrine disruptor
  • Mimics estrogen in the body
  • Associated with reproductive and developmental effects
  • Can be absorbed through skin from fabric residues
  • Affects hormone-sensitive systems

Environmental Impact

  • Highly toxic to aquatic organisms
  • Nonylphenol breakdown product is very persistent
  • Bioaccumulates in fish and wildlife
  • Released into waterways during home laundering
  • Major pollutant from textile industry

Regulatory Status

EU bans NPEs in textiles above 100 ppm since 2021. AFIRM RSL restricts to 100 ppm. Many brands have stricter limits or ban entirely.

What to Avoid

Cheap imported clothing. Items with strong chemical smell. Conventional fast fashion. Textiles without eco-certifications.

Safer Alternatives

OEKO-TEX certified clothing, GOTS organic textiles, brands committed to NPE-free supply chains (Greenpeace Detox committed), always wash new clothes before wearing
