Organotin Compounds High Risk

A class of organic compounds containing tin, used as stabilizers in PVC, catalysts in silicone and polyurethane products, and historically as antifouling agents. Common types include dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT).

Health Concerns

  • Endocrine disruption affecting multiple hormone systems
  • Reproductive and developmental toxicity
  • Immunotoxicity
  • Neurotoxic effects
  • Some forms cause skin and eye irritation
  • Can leach continuously from products

Environmental Impact

  • TBT caused severe damage to marine ecosystems
  • Persist in sediments for decades
  • Bioaccumulate in aquatic food chains
  • Caused imposex (sex changes) in marine snails at very low levels
  • Leach from PVC pipes into water supplies

Regulatory Status

TBT banned in antifouling paints globally. EU restricts DBT and DOT in consumer products. Some organotins restricted under REACH.

What to Avoid

PVC and CPVC water pipes (contain stabilizers that leach), silicone sealants with organotin catalysts, vinyl flooring

Safer Alternatives

Copper or polypropylene water pipes, titanium-catalyzed silicone products, linoleum or natural flooring, PVC-free materials
