Chromium VI (Hexavalent Chromium) High Risk
A highly toxic form of chromium that can form during leather tanning if the process is poorly controlled. Unlike Chromium III used intentionally in chrome tanning, Chromium VI is a dangerous byproduct that poses serious health risks. Particularly concerning in leather shoes, belts, watch straps, and other leather accessories that contact skin.
Health Concerns
- Known human carcinogen - causes lung cancer when inhaled
- Strong skin sensitizer - causes allergic contact dermatitis
- Can trigger severe skin reactions even at very low concentrations
- Once sensitized, reactions occur with each subsequent exposure
- Kidney and liver damage with prolonged exposure
- Especially concerning for leather products worn against skin
Environmental Impact
- Toxic to aquatic organisms
- Can contaminate soil and groundwater near tanneries
- Persistent in the environment
- Bioaccumulates in some organisms
- Tannery wastewater is major source of chromium pollution
Regulatory Status
EU restricts Chromium VI to max 3 mg/kg (3 ppm) in leather articles. AFIRM RSL restricts to 3 ppm in leather. Many brands have stricter internal limits.
What to Avoid
Cheap leather goods without quality certifications. Leather that causes skin irritation or rash. Products from unknown supply chains.
Safer Alternatives
Vegetable-tanned leather (uses plant extracts, not chrome), chrome-free certified leather, Leather Working Group certified products, or non-leather alternatives like high-quality synthetics or natural materials
