Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) High Risk

A powerful preservative used to prevent bacterial and fungal growth in water-based products. Often paired with methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) as 'Kathon CG'. Became more common as parabens were phased out.

Health Concerns

  • Strong skin sensitizer - causes allergic reactions
  • Contact dermatitis, even at low concentrations
  • Neurotoxic effects in laboratory studies
  • Eye irritation
  • Can cause severe skin reactions with repeated exposure
  • Cross-sensitization with related compounds

Environmental Impact

  • Toxic to aquatic organisms
  • Affects algae and invertebrates
  • Can persist in water systems
  • Impacts wastewater ecosystems
  • Accumulates in sediments

Regulatory Status

EU banned MIT in leave-on cosmetics, restricted in rinse-off products. Not restricted in US.

What to Avoid

Methylisothiazolinone, MIT, MI, Kathon, Neolone. Also methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI/CMIT).
