Nickel (Release) Medium Risk
Nickel metal that leaches from metal alloys in jewelry, buckles, buttons, zippers, and other metal components in direct or prolonged contact with skin. The most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis worldwide, affecting up to 15% of women and 3% of men.
Health Concerns
- Most common cause of contact allergy worldwide
- Causes allergic contact dermatitis - red, itchy rash
- Once sensitized, allergy is lifelong
- Reactions occur within hours to days of contact
- Sweat increases nickel release and absorption
- Piercing ears with nickel can cause sensitization
Environmental Impact
- Nickel mining causes environmental damage
- Can contaminate soil and water
- Toxic to some aquatic organisms at high levels
Regulatory Status
EU restricts nickel release to 0.5 μg/cm²/week for items in direct, prolonged skin contact. AFIRM RSL follows EU limits. Must pass nickel release testing, not just composition.
What to Avoid
Cheap costume jewelry. Metal items causing skin discoloration or itching. Uncoated metal directly against skin. Nickel alloys in new piercings.
Safer Alternatives
Surgical stainless steel, titanium, platinum, solid gold (14k+), nickel-free certified jewelry, plastic or coated buckles, fabric watch bands
