Cabinetry & Millwork

Kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, built-in shelving, and other interior woodwork. Typically made from composite wood products (plywood, MDF, particleboard) that may emit formaldehyde.

Why It Matters

Composite wood products can emit formaldehyde for years, especially in hot/humid conditions. Large surface area of cabinets affects indoor air quality significantly. PVC/thermofoil facings have lifecycle concerns.

Ingredient Red Flags

Watch for these on ingredient labels:

  • Standard composite wood without NAF designation
  • Thermofoil/PVC facings
  • On-site applied finishes
  • Strong chemical smell from new cabinets

What to Look For

  • Solid wood construction
  • NAF (no-added-formaldehyde) plywood, MDF, or particleboard
  • CARB Phase 2 compliant at minimum
  • Factory-applied water-based finishes

Finding Safer Options

Solid wood cabinets, NAF composite wood with solid wood veneer, water-based factory finishes, mechanical joining instead of adhesives.
