Composite Wood Products

Engineered wood products including plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), particleboard, and OSB (oriented strand board). Used in furniture, cabinets, flooring, and construction.

Why It Matters

Traditional composite wood uses formaldehyde-based resins that emit carcinogenic formaldehyde gas for years. Urea-formaldehyde releases more in humid conditions. Large surface areas significantly impact indoor air.

Chemicals of Concern in This Product

Ingredient Red Flags

Watch for these on ingredient labels:

  • No formaldehyde compliance labeling
  • Strong chemical smell
  • Standard particleboard
  • Imported products without certification

What to Look For

  • NAF (no-added-formaldehyde) designation
  • CARB Phase 2 compliant (minimum standard)
  • ULEF (ultra-low emitting formaldehyde)

Finding Safer Options

NAF plywood and MDF using soy-based or MDI binders, solid wood when possible, magnesium oxide boards for some applications.
