PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) High Risk

A large group of synthetic chemicals known as 'forever chemicals' because they don't break down in the environment. Used to make products resistant to water, grease, and stains. Includes PFOA, PFOS, and thousands of related compounds.

Health Concerns

  • Linked to various cancers including kidney and testicular
  • Thyroid hormone disruption
  • Immune system suppression
  • Reproductive and developmental effects
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Liver damage

Environmental Impact

  • Extremely persistent - do not break down in environment
  • Bioaccumulate in wildlife and humans
  • Widespread contamination of drinking water
  • Found in soil, air, and food supply globally
  • Affects fish and wildlife reproduction

Regulatory Status

PFOA and PFOS being phased out, but thousands of PFAS remain in use. EU proposing broad restrictions. Some US states banning PFAS in specific products. AFIRM RSL restricts PFOA/PFOS and certain long-chain PFAS.

What to Avoid

Products labeled 'stain-resistant', 'water-resistant', 'water-repellent', 'DWR treated', or 'nonstick'. Outdoor gear with durable water repellent coatings. Scotchgard and similar treatments.

Safer Alternatives

Cast iron or stainless steel cookware, untreated natural fabrics, wax-coated paper products. For clothing: waxed cotton, silicone-based DWR (less persistent), PFAS-free outdoor brands, wool (naturally water resistant)
