Plastic Wrap & Cling Film

Thin plastic film used to cover and preserve food. May be made from PVC (contains phthalates) or LDPE (generally safer). Direct food contact, especially with fatty or hot foods, increases chemical migration.

Why It Matters

Direct contact with food allows chemical migration. Heat dramatically increases leaching. Fatty foods absorb more plasticizers. PVC versions contain concerning plasticizers.

Ingredient Red Flags

Watch for these on ingredient labels:

  • PVC or vinyl plastic
  • Recycling code 3
  • Use with hot food
  • Microwaving with plastic wrap

What to Look For

  • LDPE or HDPE plastic (not PVC)
  • PVC-free labels
  • Beeswax wraps as alternative
  • Silicone lids and covers

Finding Safer Options

Beeswax wraps (Bee's Wrap, Abeego), silicone stretch lids, glass containers with lids, plates over bowls, parchment paper for wrapping.
