Food Storage Containers

Reusable containers for storing leftovers and meal prep. Plastic containers can leach chemicals into food, especially when heated or used with acidic/fatty foods.

Why It Matters

Direct contact with food, often for extended periods. Heating in microwave dramatically increases chemical migration. Repeated use and washing can degrade plastic.

Ingredient Red Flags

Watch for these on ingredient labels:

  • Recycling code 3 (PVC) or 7 (may contain BPA)
  • Scratched or worn plastic
  • Unknown plastic types
  • Heating any plastic

What to Look For

  • Glass or stainless steel options
  • If plastic, BPA-free and phthalate-free claims
  • Microwave-safe labeling (if you must heat in plastic)
  • Recycling codes 1, 2, 4, or 5 (safer plastics)

Finding Safer Options

Glass containers with silicone or bamboo lids, stainless steel containers, or food-grade silicone bags. Pyrex and Mason jars work well.
